My name is Amy Shaw, and I serve the Whitewright Elementary and Middle School campuses as the school counselor. I often tell students that my job is to be a helper, and that is the spirit in which I work.
My goal is for each student to be a healthy, responsible, and confident learner, ready to take on the challenges faced each day in the classroom and beyond. I collaborate with teachers and parents to offer proactive and developmentally appropriate programs and services to help students improve skills in the areas of academic, career, and personal/social development.
Throughout the school year, I teach classroom guidance lessons on a variety of topics including character education, bullying, peer pressure, smoking and substance abuse prevention, stranger danger, etc. You may click on the "Elementary" or "Middle School" page to see a list of specific programs presented on your child's campus. In addition to classroom guidance lessons, I offer small group and individual counseling on a limited basis. Students may be referred to me for counseling by the principal, teacher, or parent; students are also able to make a self-referral. If a situation arises that requires more than the services I provide, I can help parents to find community resources that are appropriate. (Parents may find the "Community Resources" page helpful.)
As we work toward the common goal of empowering our students to become productive, self-sufficient citizens, communication is paramount. If there are changes in your family, such as a death or divorce, or you need help in some way, letting us know can be helpful. Such information will be handled confidentially and sensitively to best help your child through the transition.
I also serve these campuses as the TAKS testing coordinator and the contact person for English as a Second Language (ESL) and Gifted Education (GT). If you need information or have questions about these areas, I am glad to help. In fact, if you have any question or concern about the school, let me know! If I cannot directly help or answer your question, I can help get you to the person who can! I look forward to working with you and your child this school year! Please feel free to email or call. My schedule is posted below.
