Unit Description

This unit focuses on reading, analyzing, and writing elements of a newspaper. Content-specific vocabulary terms will be introduced throughout the unit. The students will review bibliography, quotations, verb usage, and propaganda techniques. They will analyze fact vs. opinion, listen for point of view and bias, and determine primary and secondary sources. They will write an article using a story map and a business letter to the editor.

·       The newspaper is an historical artifact of modern day life.

·       Newspapers are organized according to the type and value placed on the information.

·       A properly written news story is factual and nonbiased, while editorials and advertisements include opinions and may be bias.

·         What can we learn about every day life from the newspaper?

·         How are the newspapers and news stories organized?

·         What makes a good news story?
