The Daily 5

The Kindergarten Team at Duanesburg Elementary School has adopted the Daily 5 Literacy program. The Daily 5 is a structured language arts program that helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working with peers that will lead to a lifetime of independent literacy.  The 5 elements that students participate in every day are:  Read to Self, Read with Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work and Work on Writing. While these 5 activities are being done, the teacher is working with individual students or small reading groups at the reading table.

Read to Self: Students read new and familiar stories and practice independent reading habits.

Read to Someone: Students read with a partner and share their reading experience with a friend or teacher.

Listen to Reading: Students listen to stories at the listening center and hear stories being read with fluency and inflection.

Work on Writing: Students practice their writing skills by creating classroom dictionaries.

Word Work: Students actively participate in the development of their literacy skills with a variety of hands on activities.

In our classroom we have a wide arrangement of books in our classroom library.  We have different genres (math, science, etc.) and books by different favorite authors.  We also have a number of "I Can Read" books designed for beginning readers. In addition, we have books that correlate with our weekly themes.

During the Daily 5, students are taught in small reading groups using books at their particular level.
